Maurane Mazars at Filba’s Residency

Argentina — Circulation, Residency

More Information

Maurane Mazars
Filba Foundation

Dates
July to September 2019

Location
Buenos Aires, Argentina

From July to September 2019, the Swiss illustrator Maurane Mazars participated in the first Filba Foundation Residency, in Buenos Aires. During the program, she offered public workshops of live drawing at Malba and Centro Cultural Recoleta, attended public talks, exhibited in book fairs, and, later, shared part of her experience at the opening of the Filba – Internacional Literature Festival 2019.

Maurane Mazars’ work is based on attentively looking and listening to the reality around her. She translates the stories collected in her daily life into drawings, narrations and sketches. In Buenos Aires, she combined the urban configuration of the city with personal sensations, creating images that evoke emotional responses to the most ordinary scenes, such as dogs lying around at a public square or the dimming lights of the streets.

As a closing event, Mazars also painted the mural of Teatro del Perro, leaving a print of her work in a public place of Buenos Aires. In her inaugural lecture, Mazars described her impressions of the city:

«I wake up to the sun through electric wires and cables and posts and foreign smells and the warm voices of the early workers. I look out the window and everything is brand new and ancient, alien and so intimate and I feel that, somehow, I have always been here» (from «First Pacific Mornings», Maurane Mazars’ Inaugural lecture at Filba – International Festival of Literature).
